Whether you drive a Black Cab or a Mini Cab, you could find yourself at risk on any
shift and in any part of the UK.
...but dramatically improving Safety and Security for drivers and
their passengers
is easy with the reliable 'Insight - CCTV for Taxis' - Taxi Camera and digital CCTV recording
system.
Frequently reported problems include:
-
passengers skipping off without paying the fare
-
verbal abuse of the driver
-
violence or threatened violence
Survey findings - various localised surveys appear to highlight similar
problems from across the country. All drivers are likely to suffer verbal
abuse at some time, however Asian drivers in particular appear to be subjected to such
abuse regularly.
Many of the problems involve passengers who are drunk or
have taken drugs, but whatever the reason, there is some alarm at the
apparent continuing growth in actual or threatened violence.
It's hardly surprising then, that
many taxi drivers now simply refuse to work in the evenings or at
weekends, or on special days such as Christmas or New Years Eve, etc. when
despite high demand for their services, trouble is all too common a risk.
... BUT HELP IS AT HAND
Taxi Camera type CCTV has already been piloted in
many parts of the UK, with dramatic results:-
-
Mansfield (BBC News) - according to
drivers, a trial installation in 16 cabs in the city has had an
"almost miraculous" effect on drunk and violent passengers

-
Leicester (BBC News) - A combination of
Taxi Marshals patrolling the ranks, in coordination with CCTV
recordings and the Police, has led to a reduction in late night anti
social behaviour and violence

-
Coventry (BBC News) - 50 cabs will have
CCTV cameras installed during December 2006 and January 2007 as a
pilot. It is expected that as elsewhere in the country, the project should prevent incidents from
happening and provide powerful reassurance for both passengers and
drivers

-
Sheffield (BBC News) - A pilot scheme
involving the installation of CCTV cameras into 33 cabs is planned for
Xmas 2006 in a bid to reduce incidents of violence and bad behaviour

-
Bournemouth / Dorset (BBC News) - around 70 drivers
have so far installed CCTV systems across Dorset

-
Crawley (BBC News) - talks are currently
under way re. the introduction of a pilot CCTV for taxis system

...and as well as the few specific examples listed above, taxi
drivers, fleet managers, police and local authorities across the
country, are actively considering the benefits that 'In-Cab' CCTV
could be bringing to their area
