The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic is changing the world forever. Previous epidemics, such as the 1918 flu pandemic and the bubonic plague in the 14th century, had enormous consequences and this latest pandemic is now impacting all our social, political and economic systems. But, while it’s important to acknowledge and remain aware of the tragedies that COVID-19 has brought for many people, there are plenty of positives and benefits that provide a more optimistic outlook than much of our doom-laden news.

The cost and impact of metal theft is once again in the news after four men were sentenced to a total of over 19 years in prison for stealing lead from more than 20 churches across the UK between 2018 and 2020. Specialist insurer Ecclesiastical has estimated the cost impact of these thefts to have been over £2 million due to the damage caused to targeted countryside churches. The insurer’s risk management team is encouraging churches to take precautions to avoid becoming crime victims.

The earliest known locking mechanism was discovered by archaeologists in Iraq, dating from around 4000 B.C. So we are all very familiar with traditional locks and keys, using them every day around our homes, our vehicles and our workplaces. But in recent years, advances in communications technologies have enabled the development of what are called ‘smart locks’, introducing a whole new chapter world of lock technology. In this post we look at what smart locks are, key aspects of the types that exist and whether they are as safe as their traditional counterparts.

With over 3,500 different steel types to choose from, it’s hardly surprising that “what is the best type of steel” is such a frequently asked question. Unfortunately there is no simple answer as it primarily depends on the application the steel is required for.
