Safety lighting can be used to prevent accidents such as tripping over unexpected objects in the dark,, or simply to provide low level lighting for comfort and peace of mind.
Security lighting is typically used to ensure that there is no hiding place for thieves, vandals or other unwelcome intruders.
Remember however that if you are using outdoor lighting, you`ll need to make sure that it is suitably protected against the weather. In sheltered outdoor locations such as under cover in an open entrance porchway, a lamp unit with an IP54 (or possibly even IP44) rating may be adequate, but to be sure, you should choose a unit which is IP65 rated.

Please also consider the implications of light pollution on the night sky and ensure that your lights are installed in a way that causes minimal stray light from being reflected upwards.
