Most padlocks are designed to withstand a certain amount of weathering, but if you need a padlock for use harsh or marine environments, we would recommend that you select a padlock identified specifically as a Marine or Weatherproof padlock.
Salt water is particularly corrosive, so typically manufacturers of Marine Grade Padlocks will use materials such as stainless steel, brass and phosphor bronze for metal components (ie. lock body, shackle, pins and springs, etc.), with possibly a thermoplastic cover over the lock for added protection and more comfortable handling.
Padlocks described as weatherproof, range in quality and weather resistance, with padlocks at the budget end of the market often being no more than a standard padlock in a weather protector cover.
All padlocks will benefit from regular maintenance, which will significantly increase their operational life. Maintenance includes the removal of accumulated debris from surfaces and apertures and lubrication of the locks with a dry graphite powder. Graphite powder lubrication is far superior to oils which can become thick and sludgey when mixed with airborne dust, etc. and can even cause failure of the lock mechanism over time.
Here are a few examples from our range of Marine and Weatherproof padlocks;
"Atlantic" Range of Marine Padlocks from Burg Wachter

High security locks such as Rotalok
in addition, many Discus locks offer a good degree of weather protection, having a stainless steel body casing
