Sadly, time and again, we find ourselves commiserating with victims of theft who have scrimped and compromised on their previous security setup and face not only the cost and inconvenience of replacing their Bike or other stolen equipment, but also replacing their locks, chains, ground anchors and other security products, with proven products that are designed for the job.

A word of warning: Looks can be deceiving and not all products live up to expectation, which is why formal accreditation systems such as the Sold Secure Rating System and CEN Accreditations are so important, as they offer a realistic guide to how a product will perform.

To demonstrate the point, here are just a couple of examples of poor investment decisions that we have encountered more than once over the last 20 years,

People buying in a chunky cast iron padlock costing just a few pounds at the local market, have been surprised when a single blow from a hammer has shattered the lock body or fractured or broken the shackle, rendering the lock totally useless as a security device.

Obviously there is a significant cost difference between investing in a cheap lock (however big or shiney it is), and say investing in a high performance Squire 80mm heavy duty padlock, but which would you want to rely on to protect your equipment?
There have been numerous occasions where people have purchased a length of anchor chain, to save the few extra pounds a security chain would have cost them.

Unfortunately the design concept of an anchor chain is entirely different to that of a security chain as they are intended for very different applications.

The links of an anchor chain for instance, must incorporate a high level of ductility and elasticity to cope with the sort of stresses imposed on it by a ship at anchor bobbing around on the sea, buffeted by wind and tides.

A security chain however is designed to withstand cropping, sawing, freezing, hammer and other forms of attack, so will be manufactured in a different way and hardened to a much higher level, while maintaining ductility, but at a lower level.
