Protecting Fingers from Door Injury

Do you care for children? If you do then you will do doubt be highly aware of what’s involved in keeping them safe from injury. Children love to explore, discover new things and have new experiences - this is all part of their development. But are you, as their carer, adequately aware of the risks that exist around the home and the precautions you can take to keep little ones safe?

An area that’s often overlooked is the ever-present risk of finger injury due to closing doors. There are as many as 40,000 to 80,000 accidents every year due to fingers being trapped in doors. And children’s little fingers are particularly vulnerable.

Finger Injuries

Children who have suffered finger injury from doors can experience lifelong problems as a result. And it’s worth keeping in mind that young children, under the age of five, suffer the highest number of door-related finger injuries that ultimately result in amputation.

Injuries to fingers and hands have a serious impact on every simple activity, from eating food to getting dressed. The more serious the injury, the greater the impact. Fingertip injury alone can result in 20% loss in hand strength. The potential for finger injury is clearly a cause for concern and special attention should be paid to risks around the home.

Where Fingers Get Trapped

Injury statistics show that most finger injuries from doors occur on the hinge side. This is especially true for younger children under the age of five. If you take a look at the hinge side of a few doors you will immediately see the dangers that exist. Imagine a child is gripping the hinge side of a door or has their little fingers in the door frame recess and then the door is pushed closed by an adult, or by an automatic door-closer. You will immediately understand the risk of serious and extremely painful injury. So what precautions can you take?

Hinge Side Finger Protection

There are many finger protection products available today that are intended to prevent fingers from being trapped on the hinge side of doors. But many of these shields are ineffective and might even prevent fire doors from closing properly.

The FingerPro system from Insight Security provides robust protection on the hinge side of doors without inhibiting easy or automatic closure. It’s recognised by the Childrens Charter as an effective safety product that really works. Installation is quick and simple as shown in our video.
