Roller Barrier Repair Confirms Anti-Climb System Reliability

A recent visit to a local school, to deal with damage caused to their Roller Barrier installation, has highlighted both the longevity and efficacy of our trusted Roller Barrier anti climb system. Read on to learn more.

Back in 2021 we proudly described how our Roller Barrier non-aggressive anti climb system had been successfully deployed to a local school that was experiencing problems due to youngsters climbing onto flat roof tops.

A Challenging Installation

The original Roller Barrier installation needed to contend with a number of installation challenges.

  1. The length of the required Roller Barrier bracket supporting arms meant it was impossible to fix the supporting brackets to the fascia wall.
  2. There were multiple obstructions, including power cables and pipework, that needed to be overcome.
  3. It was not possible to affix supporting brackets directly to the roof as this would compromise the rooftop weatherproofing.

The Insight Security team overcame these challenges by designing an ingenious, robust bracket-support lattice that bolted directly to the school building brickwork wall and effectively stepped over all the obstructions. The lattice structure was devised to be strong enough to reliably support both single and double row Roller Barrier wherever it was needed around the school premises.

Recent Roller Barrier Damage

The Insight Security response team were recently alerted to damage caused to one area of the Roller Barrier installation around this local school, caused by a fallen tree branch, brought down by recent high winds. They immediately sprang into action.

The images above and below clearly show the damage caused by the fallen tree branch. While Roller Barrier is incredibly robust, the impact of this fallen tree branch is clear to see.

When assessed it was apparent that Roller Barrier brackets, shafts and spigots required replacement. However, the virtually indestructible Roller Cups were entirely undamaged. So the Insight Security team were quickly able to replace the damaged components, reuse the existing Roller Cups and restore the Roller Barrier protection in just a couple of hours.

Reliable Anti Climb Protection for Over 5 Years

During the visit, the performance of the Roller Barrier anti climb protection was discussed with the school care-taker. Prior to the Roller Barrier installation, over 5 years ago, the school was experiencing ongoing problems with youngsters climbing onto the flat rooftops. Neighbouring residents were continuously sending the school e-mail messages, every day, reporting the problems these children were causing. As well as creating annoyance and possibly damaging the flat rooftop weatherproofing, these children were putting themselves at significant risk.

Insight Security was consulted to provide a reliable anti climb solution that would safely protect the roof tops without making the school look like a fortress. Roller Barrier installation designers closely examined the site and consulted with the school to come up with the bespoke system that’s now been in place for over 5 years.

The school care-taker reported that since Roller Barrier was installed the school had no longer received any reports about youngsters climbing onto the flat roof tops. Neighbours were not being troubled by this bad behaviour and the continuous stream of email messages had immediately stopped, once Roller Barrier had been deployed. The care-taker told the response team that the only people to have gone onto the flat roof areas, since Roller Barrier had been installed, were the school’s maintenance personnel, dealing with routine maintenance duties.

Zero Maintenance - Long Lasting Anti-Climb Protection

The entire Roller Barrier anti climb system, surrounding the school, was inspected by the team from Insight Security during their visit. Conversation with the school care-taker confirmed that the system had required zero maintenance over the 5 years since it was first installed. Other than being a little grimy in some areas, the entire non-aggressive Roller Barrier anti climb protection was confirmed to be as effective as it was when first installed and readily capable of providing many more years of maintenance free anti-climb protection.

How Roller Barrier Provides Long-Lasting Anti Climb Protection

The long, reliable service life of the Roller Barrier system is due to a combination of material selection, simple mechanical design, corrosion resistance, UV protection and the absence of wear-prone components.

1. Very Simple Mechanical Design

One of the biggest reasons for the system’s longevity is the clever design that involves very few parts:

  • Loosely mounted, rotating roller cups
  • Robust central shaft
  • Strong support brackets.

There are no motors, springs, hinges, electronics, or complex mechanisms that can fail. The cups simply rotate freely on the robustly supported central shaft with no mechanical wear and nil common failure points.

2. UV-Resistant Polycarbonate Roller Cups

The roller cups are manufactured from high-quality polycarbonate, which is:

  • Highly impact resistant
  • Difficult to break
  • UV stabilized to resist degradation from sunlight
  • Self-extinguishing (fire resistant).

UV inhibitors and additives are incorporated during production to protect the material from long-term exposure to sunlight. The rotating plastic Roller cups are manufactured to "tropical standard" UV resistance, which means they easily withstand the impact of UK sun exposure.

3. Corrosion-Resistant Central Shaft

The central shaft is made from extruded aircraft-grade aluminium.

Advantages provided by this material selection include:

  • Nil rust
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Good strength-to-weight ratio
  • Suitable for harsh outdoor environments.

Because the shaft is aluminium rather than ordinary steel, long-term structural deterioration is minimised, enabling the shafts to remain strong and reliable for many years.

4. Galvanised Steel Support Brackets

The support brackets are manufactured from heavy-duty steel and then galvanised for long term weather protection.

Galvanising provides:

  • Protection against rust
  • Long-term weather resistance
  • Extended structural reliability in outdoor conditions.

It is estimated that the galvanised Roller Barrier support brackets can remain protected from weathering for approximately 25 years.

5. Impact-Resistant Construction

The roller cups are designed to withstand abuse and physical attack.

Roller Barrier cups are:

  • Robust and impact resistant
  • Virtually unbreakable
  • Capable of withstanding severe impacts.

This recent incident demonstrates how robust these Roller Cups are. This resistance to accidental damage and vandalism contributes significantly to the overall lifespan of the Roller Barrier system.

6. Maintenance-Free Operation

Unlike many security systems, Roller Barrier does not require:

  • Lubrication
  • Bearing replacement
  • Tension adjustments
  • Routine servicing.

Roller Barrier is very much an "install and forget" security system that is effectively maintenance free once installed. The only maintenance requirement is regular inspection to verify ongoing functionality.

7. Modular Construction

The system is assembled from modular sections joined by spigots and supported at regular intervals.

Benefits of this design attribute include:

  • Easy replacement of individual parts, if required
  • No need to replace an entire installation
  • Simple adaptation or extension of existing systems when required.

This modularity helps keep installations functional for decades. As demonstrated by this recent incident, the components in the section of barrier damaged by the fallen tree branch were quickly and easily replaced while all of the original Roller Cups were reused, enabling the repair to be completed very quickly and at minimum cost.

Expected Roller Barrier Service Life

People often need to know how long a Roller Barrier installation is expected to last.

  • The system carries a 3-year warranty
  • Roller cups are guaranteed for 5 years
  • Current installations have proven operationally effective for up to 18+ years, with many further years of useful life expected.
  • Estimated overall life expectancy is approximately 15–25 years or more, depending on environment and exposure.

Together, these features explain why Roller Barrier installations can remain operational for decades while requiring little or no maintenance.
